The Stone of Truth - Part 13

When Laetia awoke, her legs were sticky with blood and each breath she took was like a needle stabbing into her heart. Lady Hialdan was holding her hand gently.

"Laetia, are you awake?"

"Yes.. Oh! Milady!" She tried to jump out of the bed but she groaned in pain.

"Stay there. It's fine now.. That cursed devil is gone."

The cursed devil. The devil with angel face. Her Lord was a devil. And a traitor.

"Zargoth.."

"Yes, what did he tell you?"

"He showed me.. a scroll. From Lord Hialdan to the Horseman. Telling.. he had the Stone.."

Lady Corqurst started and touched the Stone in her forehead.

"And that he could attack."

"It doesn't surprise me.."

"And he said.. they need the Sword. The Sword is with Zargoth. The Lord knows where Lord Zargoth dwells."

The Lady paced up and down in front of the window. Suddenly, she gasped. "Laetia! Oh, Haven. Laetia."

"What is it, Milady?" Laetia jumped out of bed and moaned. She clutched the bedsheets to keep her balance.

"My water just broke."

"Oh, Milady.. Milady, I have a lucky rabbit's foot in my room.. I'll bring it."

"No time for that! I need to reach Zargoth now! Help me to my horse!"

"Yes, Milady."

Laetia supported her Lady, panting. If she bent just this way the pain was almost bearable. Nobody stopped them on their long way passing the Lord's room, down the giant stair, over the big entrance carpet, back through the kitchen, out in the sun, across the lawn and into the stables. She would have normally thought more of it, but there was the stallion and now was no time for thoughts.

Laetia helped Lady Hialdan up, then struggled into the saddle behind her.

"Go!" shouted the Lady and the horse started into a gallop. Laetia held Lady Corqurst's head as she cried from the pain.
